Through his work as an elite wrestler and as a coach of young wrestlers through the Askren Wrestling Academy, Ben Askren explains the motivation for treating all athletes the same regardless of when they come into their own in the sport. Askren believes that while he loves having his young athletes win State titles, that is not the overall goal and it is definitely not worth sacrificing their long term success for. Anyone involved in an athletes development should praise and encourage them for achieving things when they are young, but understand that just because an athlete doesn’t experience high-level success early on does not mean that they won’t potentially reach great success later on in their lives.
