Embrace the Struggle

This Mental Monday, Ben Askren analyzes a passage from Range, a book by David Epstein that deals with specialization in sports, academics, and life. The passage explains that when professors promote short term achievement over long term achievement in their classes, they harm student performance in subsequent higher-level classes. Askren explains that this can be a useful concept to think about when teaching but also in coaching. While it may be uncomfortable, sometimes the best course of action is to let an athlete struggle with a concept in the short term, so that they can have longer-term success in the future.
