On this episode of On Deck, Ben Askren is reunited with former T-Row and the Funky Show co-host and 2x NCAA Champion Tommy Rowlands. Rowlands is a 2004 graduate of the Ohio State University, where he was a 2x Big Ten Champion, a 4x NCAA All-American and 3x NCAA Finalist for the Buckeyes. Rowlands is the career record holder at Ohio State for takedowns, wins and team points. Over the course of his eight-year international career, Rowlands was a 6x U.S. National Team Member, a University World and Pan-Am Champion, and a 2x U.S. Open Champion.
Rowlands joins Askren to discuss the current state of wrestling, the hypothetical Dake vs. Burroughs faceoff which took place virtually earlier this week, things to look forward to next year and a way-too-early prediction of the 2021 team race at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Askren and Rowlands breakdown how standout Hawkeye Spencer Lee has changed the dynamic of Iowa’s wrestling program, who benefits by the 2020 Games being delayed, and how the wrestling mentality prepares people to handle the unpredictable and unbalanced nature of life.
